Hi, i'm very please to join you.
i've allready found here more solutions and idea for my bagpipe than i've heard for the last 15 years. I hope you'll understand my french accent.
My name: Frédéric Vigouroux
Where I am for a living: France, indre-et-loire, Tours
Where I am by spirit: Gasconha
My main instrument: Bagpipe of the Landes (boha)
Other instruments I would like to play: Säckpipa, etc.
Other interests: reed making, customizing the boha,
why i came here: i love the swedish traditional music. I've just discovered Olle Gällmo's website and this is a revelation ! Could we have such an ancyclopedy for the boha ! It is so generous to give for free your knowledge. i knew that säckpipas are similar to our boha by the way reeds are made. The way you play graces notes, and halfclosed fingering and a tricks i can't explain. Their history are similar too : the last ancestral boha-player died and the instrument nearly disappeared. Some musicien during the 70's to make knew one and today, we are more than 200 boha's player in France. (We had the chance to find a recording of this musicien in 1994.)
i think we have a lot to share. _________________ Vigxf |

My name: James MacDonald Reid (Seumas mac Dhonnchaidh Ruaidh)
Where I am: Glen Shira, Argyll, Scotland (I also have a flat in central Edinburgh near the National Library).
My main instrument: Old fashioned Highland pipes (old-pitch heirloom made around 1870, whale's tooth and brass mounts), kaba gaida
Other instruments I play: djura gaida, Macedonian, Slovak, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, French and Italian pipes. I learned these from old-timers within their communities during the 1960s. I later studied Ethnomusicology, specialising on the use of bagpipes in European folkdance, at Harvard University, 1980 - 85.
Other interests: Folklore and folkculture. I inherited a wealth of Gaelic lore and customs from my family and teachers. Back in the '60s I set out to learn about other European folklore and culture, especially in the Balkans and Slovakia. I got my Swedish sackpipa about 30 years ago from the late Bob Thomas, who I first met in 1966 and who used to visit me to share our interests. We travelled together in Italy in 1975.
Although I don't have a website, I have a page on Facebook under my full name which has albums with pictures of many of my bagpipes and others.
Publications: "The Medieval Bagpipe" (Booklet for Early Music Company 1985), "The Indigenous Folkdance of Scotland" (Scottish Arts Council 1991), "Pipes and Pastures" (Radio series broadcast in 1997 BBC Radio 2), "Clothing in the 17th Century Western Isles" (Contribution to Anthology on Martin Martin, Glasgow University, 1998), "Dannsa" (Gaelic-medium history of Dance for Highlands and Islands University, 2000), "A History of Dance in Gaelic Scotland" (Published in series in "Highland Dancing" magazine, 2002) |

My name: Manuel Balaguer-Cortes
Where I am: Alyth, Perthshire, Scotland
My main instrument: High and Low Whistles, jew's harp, flute
Other instruments I play: Säckpipa (Leif Eriksson), seljefløyte, spilåpipa, recorder, gaita galega and some instruments I bought and I haven't learned to play yet (including a kohorn, a pig-snout psaltery and a Turkish ney)
Other interests: Beyond playing and listening to traditional music (mainly Scottish, Spanish and Scandinavian) I like reading (specially books on religion, mythology, folklore...), hillwalking and having a pint of real ale from time to time.
I play locally in sessions of Scottish/Irish music style. Not many people playing nordic stuff around here, never mind Swedish bagpipes! If anybody into nordic music lives around here and fancy a little jam, please let me know.
I got a set of Leif Eriksson bagpipes a few years back but I've been playing very seldom, mainly due to ongoing house renovation projects over the years...
All the best,
Manuel |

Hi Guys,
My Name: Heath Morton
Location: Tasmania, Australia
Musical instruments I play: None! About twenty years ago I played bass guitar in high school for about six months as it was mandatory to play something. The sackpipa, when I make one, will effectively be my first as I have forgotten everything about music.
Other interests: Widely varied. My interest in the early middle ages (the dark ages were not that dark) and reconstructing things, preferably from archaeological evidence where possible, brought me to bagpipes in general and the sackpipa in particular.
I make the odd woodworking and blacksmithing tools for instance. Did a plough earlier this year and ploughed a field behind some oxen. It worked! Even in my untrained hands.
So I intend to make the earliest, most low technology sackpipa I can, with as few extensions as I can get away with. I perceive a true 'folk' item, such as I can deduce is likely to have been made a long time ago in a villagers spare time, when not mostly occupied scratching a subsistence from the land. Therefore, I plan to use exclusively the tools I have made, and any others I will have to make.
Cheers |

I have a harjedalspipa, it is a double one, ie it has a drone chamber as well as a 'chanter', it plays an interesting Scandinavian scale compatible with overtone flutes, but other notes are available through cross fingering.
I believe Gunnar Stenmark is the only maker, and he made mine, although I'm not sure he makes double harjedalspipan these days.
http://www.harjedalspipan.se/
There is a technical drawing in the back of Ol'Jansas Latbok (the 'a' in Latbok should have a circle over it, but I am limited by my kyboard) which could be used to help make one if you have a lathe. I bought this book from Fredman's Musik in Stockholm, Ingegerd there speaks good English and is very helpful if you phone them.
Ale Moller released a CD of harjedalspipa music a while ago, which is useful, and there are tunes in the Latbok. I can't remember now if it was drone.se or Tongang which brought it out, but I'm sure it was one of those two and you'll find it on the net I'm sure.
We tend to use it for playing willow flute tunes as these fit very easily on it, an 'A' harjedalspipa is an octave below, and plays the same notes as a 'D' willow flute (I am letting slip a trade secret here!). My partner Kate plays the harjedalspipa in this context, and I play willow flute. |

My name: Matthew
Where I am: Washington DC, USA
My main instrument: Appalachian dulcimer
Other instruments I play: Sackpipa, ukulele, Hayden duet concertina, fretless banjo, pennywhistle, Shape Note singing. I also have a bunch of gear I don't do justice, like an Anglo-Saxon lyre, kora, shakuhachi, Chemnitzer, etc.
Other interests: Motorcycling (have a little Honda CB250 as a city bike), reviewing restaurants, museum-going, going to see punk bands, editing Wikipedia.
I got into sackpipa less out of a specific interest in Scandinavian music (though I do enjoy it) and more because I love the tone of the instrument, its relative uniqueness among bagpipes, and its great chromaticity. I have a Seth Hamon cast-resin E/A set (blue with white swirls), and a Boris Favre D/G bellows-blown set in mesquite. I'm hoping to get a C/F chanter, a set of pipes with several large uilleann-type drones, and maybe a double-chantered sackpipa. At this point, I'm pretty sold on the sackpipa out of all the pipes out there. |
