|
|
Hi!
On request, I have added videos to the page on beginner friendly tunes on my site. I consider this a test for now, the videos are not of very high quality and I only play the tunes in tempo - no slowed down versions for beginners. I may change that in the future, if you think it is a good idea.
Since the videos are probably not of public interest - they focus on my hands and are probably rather boring to a non-piper - I only put them up locally on my site, not on MySpace/YouTube or similar places.
Do feel free to comment. _________________ Info on Swedish bagpipes at http://olle.gallmo.se/sackpipa

Olle,
I thought the videos were quite interesting. I agree about the tempo, If I were just starting out, the speed at which the tunes were played would probably be a bit daunting.
Aside from that though, there is only one thing that I think you might change: rotate your position so as to expose more of your left side to the camera, that way your thumbs will be more visible. You frequently play a descending series of grace notes starting at top E (I can always tell It's you playing by listening for that), this may not be readily apparent to a beginner at first, being able to see your thumbs would help illustrate that.
By the way, that's a very nice looking bagpipe you have there.
I can only imagine that Alban's (already fantastic) craftsmanship will have gained even higher quality in the years since you picked up your first set. Do you notice any difference in playability by comparing your old set to the new one? _________________ Aaron |

Only one of them would. I think you mean my right hand side, which would make my top hand thumb more visible, but the right hand thumb would still not be seen since it is then obscured by the right hand, and what I do with the right hand fingers would not be as visible either, I think. So it's a trade off. _________________ Info on Swedish bagpipes at http://olle.gallmo.se/sackpipa

Thank you!
These are great, though I do wish I could see the top thumb more as it seems to be vital to some of the embellishments. I think if you turned so that your right side faced the camera just enough to see the thumb that this would be great. You're an elegant player and a pleasure to watch as well as to hear.
As far as speed goes, since you posted these as files on your site (instead of on YouTube, etc) I was able to use Windows Media Player's ability to slow things down (without changing pitch!). It will allow you to slow it down to 1/2 speed which makes it a lot easier to see what's going on (it also allows you to speed it up to 2X speed and damn is that fast!). Also nice since I'm on slow-speed is that I can download them once and keep them around. So this actually works out well. It's amazing what the public finds interesting...I'm sure there are many who would watch it on YouTube as well. Thanks again! |

I had no idea Windows Media Player could do that (slow down what is played without changing pitch). I just tried it (right-click on the play button). Neat.
Horrible to hear myself play in slow tempo, though. All mistakes are augmented that way. :-) _________________ Info on Swedish bagpipes at http://olle.gallmo.se/sackpipa
