Hej Säckpipare!

My name is Olle Gällmo and I welcome you to this forum about an old Swedish traditional music instrument - the Säckpipa or Swedish bagpipe.
What is a Swedish bagpipe? Well, there may have been several Swedish bagpipe models through history, but the only one to survive to see the 20th century was the one from Dalarna (a province in mid Sweden). However, also that model has variations and has been extended in various ways. Where to draw the line is a matter of debate and personal opinion. I'm liberal on that point. I hope that this forum will become a communication channel for isolated Säckpipa players and other interested people, in particular in USA and Canada where I know that there are quite a few players of this rare instrument. Learning Swedish bagpipes in isolation is not easy. The instrument is difficult to maintain and keep in tune. Pipers need a place to find other pipers to share their experiences and frustrations with. I hope that this forum will become that place.

P.S. "Säckpipa" [sec-pee-pah] is just the Swedish word for bagpipe and would in Swedish apply to any other form of bagpipe, but here we use it as a name for the Swedish bagpipe in particular.
