My name: Jonathan Parker
Where I am: near San Diego, California, USA
My main instrument: Fiddle
Other instruments I play: Sackpipa (since 1986), tinwhistle, flute, mandolin, guitar, etc., etc.
Other interests: Woodworking, instrument making, gardening, walking, and listening to music.
I first heard the sackpipa played at the Rattviksdansen festival in 1984, and talked to the piper I heard at the participant's dinner near the end of the festival. I wish I could remember his name. Does anyone here have a memory that goes back that far?
A couple of years later, while visiting John Erik Eggens in Rattvik, I spoke with Leif Eriksson, and ordered two sets of D/G pipes from him. I still own one set, and a friend here in San Diego has the other one. I'm still using the original reeds (!) after 21 years. I recall that at that time Leif charged US$180 for each set, and told me that he would not accept payment until I had received the instruments and was happy with them. I wired him the money the day the box appeared on my porch.
After this long playing (mostly) in isolation, it's nice to see people interested in this instrument sharing their enthusiasm.
And by the way, the baby tuning my drone for me in the avatar is now 14 years old _________________ Jonathan |
