A Swedish musician friend pointed out that this recording of classical French music might be pipe music. Any guesses as to whether it is French pipes, or pipes at all?

You will need Spotify: http://open.spotify.com/track/2B66a115DHExsySCiF7otH

I can't listen to it - I don't have Spotify - but just from the cover picture I think I can guess. Both Rameau and Louise XV implies that his is chamber music which, at the time and place, sometimes included Musette de cour.

This type of bagpipes are very rare today, but they are nice instruments. They are the predecessors to Northumbrian smallpipes, and the first I know of to include a regulator like the ones common on Uilleann pipes today. I saw and heard a Musette de cour last summer at Chateau d'Ars in France.

Jean-Christophe Maillard, the greatest "musette de cour" player, here playing one of the many Chédeville's transcription of Vivaldi's compositions. I had the chance to met Jean-Christophe in 2010, great piper if there is one (he also plays lot of other french pipes) and also really fine and gentle man.

If you have the chance to see him or one of his most brilliant pupil François Lazarevic (he plays here at 3:51 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eTAeHH3HQA), don't hesitate !

You know, I don't want to sound disrespectful, but the Chédeville clip reminded me very much of some Romanian gypsy band playing in a restaurant somewhere. That oomp-oomph-oomph bass...
This is not a comment on the playing of the pipes, mind you, but on the overall impression of the music.
